We’re nearly halfway through the 2009 Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau and 9x ASP World Champion and has taken the lead with an electrifying performance in Heat 2. Slater, 2002 champion of this event, aiming to be the first ever 2-time winner, dropped into the wave of the morning, got swallowed by a huge ball of whitewater and somehow emerged still on his feet. He caught his four allotted waves in 30 minutes had to come in to the beach with half of his heat remaining.
Mark Healey, Garrett McNamara, Carlos Burle and Peter Mel have also put up standout performances so far in Round 1. Watch all of the action on the live webcast with big waves still pumping and and Round 2 set to begin.
